De zeventienjarige Novalee Nation heeft al een miserabel leven achter de rug. Haar vader heeft ze nooit gekend en haar moeder liet haar in de steek voor de eerste de beste macho. Novalee verhuisde van de ene gastfamilie naar de andere en een warm nestgevoel heeft ze nooit gekend. Maar dan ontmoet ze Willy Jack. Aanvankelijk vindt Novalee liefde bij hem, tot zijn drankverslaving van hem een bullebak maakt. Wanneer Novalee zwanger raakt, weigert Willy Jack zijn verantwoordelijkheid te nemen en dumpt haar in een wegrestaurant. Daar staat ze dan: zonder diploma, geen geld, geen werk en geen verblijfplaats.
