De film vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van Florence Foster Jenkins, de legendarische Amerikaanse socialite die in de vorige eeuw wanhopige pogingen deed een beroemde zangeres te worden en zich daarbij niet liet hinderen door gebrek aan talent. Haar echtgenoot en manager St Clair Bayfield was vastbesloten om zijn geliefde Florence af te schermen van de waarheid. Maar wanneer Florence besluit om een openbaar concert in Carnegie Hall te geven in 1944, staat St Clair voor zijn grootste uitdaging tot dan toe.
