Matrozen Gabey, Chip en Ozzie hebben vierentwintig uur verlof in New York. Chip wil er een cultureel bezoek van maken, maar zijn vrienden hebben geen interesse in de bezienswaardigheden en de toeristische trekpleisters: zij willen een vrouw versieren! Gabey zet zijn zinnen op Ivy Smith, de knappe jongedame die verkozen is tot "Metromeisje van de Maand". Hij is vastbesloten Ivy op te sporen en begint samen met zijn vrienden een wilde zoektocht door de stad. Onderweg valt Ozzie voor de charmes van antropologe Claire en kan Chip niet weerstaan aan de sexy taxichauffeur Brunhilde.
