De jonge Clara krijgt van haar peetvader Drosselmeyer op kerstavond een pop in de vorm van een notenkraker. Als het meisje er op klokslag twaalf uur naar gaat kijken, komt ze terecht in een magische wereld waarin een oorlog woedt tussen peperkoekensoldaten en een leger muizen. Ze vertrekt op queeste in het Land van Sneeuwvlokken, het Land van Bloemen en het Land van Zoetigheid, waar ze de Sugar Plum Fairy ontmoet. Het Vierde Rijk wordt dan weer met harde hand geregeerd door Mother Ginger, waartegen Clara het zal moeten opnemen.
