Nadat een missie fout afloopt, moeten Ethan Hunt en zijn IMF-team, bestaande uit Alan Hunley, Benji Dunn en Luther Stickell, racen tegen de klok. Ze worden bijgestaan door Ilsa Faust en Julia Meade die hen helpen hun nieuwe missie tot een goed einde te brengen. Tijdens hun avontuur dreigt er voortdurend gevaar in de vorm van nucleair terrorisme. Bovendien wordt Hunt gekweld door zijn verleden en door de keuzes die hij in zijn leven maakte.
