De schrik slaat de bewoners van Lake Placid om het hart wanneer het aangevreten lijk van een duiker aan de oevers van het meer wordt gevonden. Het gruwelijk verminkte lichaam vertoont sporen van een monsterlijk wezen, een fors uitgemeten tand markeert de beet waarmee de helft van het lichaam werd opgeslokt. Het rustige leven in de beboste regio is hiermee op slag veranderd. Een team van stadse onderzoekers komt naar het platteland om letterlijk de waarheid boven water te brengen.
