William Bligh, een zeekapitein, stond in 1787 aan het roer van The Bounty tijdens een ruim 16.000 km lange reis vol gevaar, chaos en krankzinnigheid. Na 31 dagen strijd te hebben geleverd tegen hevige stormen en de niet aflatende wreedheid van kapiteit Bligh, kan de vermoeide bemanning eindelijk opgelucht voet aan wal zetten op een afgelegen eiland. Maar al snel wil hun tirannieke kapitein weer vertrekken en de radeloze mannen wenden zich tot eerste stuurman Fletcher Christian om hen te helpen het schip, desnoods met geweld, over te nemen.
