'Suffragette' volgt de begindagen van de feministische beweging in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en hun strijd om één van de meest fundamentele grondrechten: stemrecht. Maud (Mulligan) is een jonge werkende vrouw in de feministische beweging aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Wanneer ze merkt dat vreedzaam protest niets verandert, radicaliseert ze en wendt ze zich tot geweld als middel om haar doel te bereiken.
