My left foot is gebaseerd op het leven van schrijver en artiest Christy Brown. Christy Brown wordt geboren in een groot Iers gezin van 13 kinderen. Hij is van bij zijn geboorte helemaal verlamd en wordt door bijna iedereen afgeschreven als hulpeloos en achterlijk. Zijn ouders beslissen om hem thuis te verzorgen. Het enige wat Christy zelf kan controleren, is zijn linkervoet. Zijn leven verandert dan ook drastisch wanneer hij met zijn voet en een stukje krijt een teken schrijft op de grond. Dit is voor Mrs. Brown het bewijs van haar zoons intelligentie. Dankzij zijn moed en veel oefening en inspanning, leert Christy schrijven met zijn voet. Dit is de start van zijn emotionele reis als auteur, artiest en poëet.
