Robin van Loxley (Taron Egerton), een door oorlog geharde kruisvaarder keert met hulp van de Moorse commandant Little John (Jamie Foxx) na jaren terug naar Engeland. Thuis blijkt zijn landgoed verwoest, heeft de liefde van zijn leven een ander omdat hij ten onrechte dood werd verklaard en heerst er armoede onder de inwoners van Nottingham dankzij de meedogenloze sheriff (Ben Mendelsohn). Robin en John beginnen een dappere opstand tegen de corrupte Engelse kroon en zetten hun nieuwe vechtstijl in om belastinggeld te onderscheppen.
