In 1927, enkele maanden na de gebeurtenissen uit de eerste film, is Gellert Grindelwald ontsnapt en is hij medestanders naar zijn kant aan het overhalen. Dit met de belofte om tovenaars te verheffen boven alle niet-magische wezens. Alle hoop om hem tegen te houden rust op zijn oude vriend Albus Dumbledore. Uiteraard is ook Newt Scamander, een voormalig leerling van Dumbledore, van de partij.
