De jonge, knappe maar wat wilde Eugene Morgan wil trouwen met Isabel Amberson, de dochter van een gegoede rijke familie. Maar in plaats trouwt ze met de saaie maar betrouwbare Wilbur Minafer. Jaren later wanneer Wilbur overleden is keert Eugene terug en vraagt Isabel nog een keer ten huwelijk. Ditmaal stemt ze in, maar haar verwende zoon probeert het huwelijk te saboteren.
