De beroemde gebroeders Wilhelm en Jacob Grimm lichten goedgelovige dorpsbewoners op door hen zogezegd te beschermen tegen angstaanjagende wezens zoals heksen, reuzen en monsters. De praktijken van de twee zelfverklaarde helden komen echter aan het licht, en ze worden in de boeien geslagen. Er wordt hen vrijlating aangeboden, op voorwaarde dat ze negen vermiste kinderen van het dorpje Marbaden levend terugvinden. Daar worden de broers geconfronteerd met allerlei hoogst mysterieuze gebeurtenissen.
