In 1889 besluit weduwe Catherine Weldon haar onbevredigende leven in New York achter te laten om haar droom als schilder te verwezenlijken. Alleen reist ze af naar Dakota om het stamhoofd van de Sioux, 'Sitting Bull', te ontmoeten met als doel hem te schilderen.
