1951. Duane en Sonny zijn twee boezemvrienden die samen opgroeien in het provincienest Anarene. Ze vullen hun dagen met de schaarse in Anarene beschikbare ontspanning: film, cafés, basketbal en meisjes. Jacy, het meest begeerde meisje van de stad, is de vriendin van Duane. Maar na een slechte ervaring in een motelkamer, laat Jacy haar vriend vallen voor een rijke student. Duane is gekwetst en wil weg uit Anarene. Het stadje is langzaam aan het leeglopen, de inwoners verhuizen naar grote steden in de hoop daar een betere toekomst te vinden. De beide vrienden staan voor een moeilijke keuze wanneer de kleine bioscoop van Sam the Lion moet sluiten. De jongens voelen dat ze een hoofdstuk in hun leven moeten afsluiten en een stap naar de toekomst moeten zetten.
