De film vertelt het verhaal van Travis (Harry Dean Stanton). Travis wordt gevonden in de woestijn en door zijn broer Walt (Dean Stockwell) meegenomen naar huis. Daar aangekomen vindt een ontroerende ontmoeting plaats tussen Travis en zijn inmiddels 7 jaar oude zoontje Hunter. Als blijkt dat ook Hunters moeder (Nastassja Kinski) nog in leven is gaan Hunter en Travis samen naar haar op zoek.
