Hamlet, Prins van Denemarken, keert terug naar zijn vaderland wanneer zijn vader, de koning, sterft. Zijn moeder Gertrude is al hertrouwd met zijn oom Claudius, de nieuwe koning. Ze dringen bij Hamlet aan om hem te laten trouwen met zijn geliefde Ophelia. Wanneer de geest van zijn vader echter verschijnt om Hamlet te vertellen dat hij door Claudius en Gertrude vermoord is, is Hamlet uit op wraak.
