De poolbiljarter Fast Eddie Felson vindt de jonge, veelbelovende speler Vincent in een plaatselijke bar, en ziet in hem een jongere versie van zichzelf. Om oude tijden weer te laten herleven, biedt Eddie aan om Vincent te trainen. Vincent besluit het aanbod aan te nemen en Eddie neemt Vincent en zijn vriendin mee op een tour door het land. Vincent's neiging om zijn talent te duidelijk te laten blijken, leidt echter al snel tot confrontaties met Eddie.
