Sara groeit op in een stadje in Illinois. Ze is dol op ballet en droomt ervan ooit aan de befaamde Juilliard School te studeren. Wanneer haar moeder omkomt bij een verkeersongeval moet Sara haar grootse toekomstplannen echter opbergen en ze trekt in bij haar vader, Roy, een muzikant uit Chicago, die jaren geleden vrouw en kind heeft verlaten. Zo belandt Sara in een voor haar totaal onbekende multiraciale en multiculturele schoolomgeving. Aanvankelijk heeft ze het moeilijk om het overlijden van haar moeder te verwerken. Maar spoedig vindt ze soelaas bij de kleurlinge Chenille, een tienermoeder en oudere zus van de knappe en begaafde danser Derek, die Sara in de hip-hop cultuur inwijdt.
