Beginnend als arbeider in een fabriek raakt een man verzeild in allerlei situaties die de nadelen van de modernisering illustreren. Hij belandt in een zenuwinrichting en in de gevangenis, zoekt wanhopig naar werk en probeert ondertussen ook nog een goede toekomst op te bouwen met een meisje van de straat.
